The crypto security roadmap has suddenly become a hot topic. Senior Ethereum researcher Justin Drake has just urged the industry to start preparing for the potential vulnerabilities of the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA), the key system that has long protected our digital assets.
Interestingly, this threat comes not only from quantum computers (Q-day), but also from rapid advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) in solving complex mathematical problems. Drake says some classical mathematical assumptions are beginning to be overturned by the capabilities of today’s AI.
“Bunker Mode” Strategy and the Safety of Fresh Addresses
To address this vulnerability, Drake recommends a preventive measure he calls “Bunker Mode”:
• Gradual Migration: Large-scale asset holders are advised to move funds to new addresses (fresh addresses) whose public keys have never been exposed or used to sign a transaction.
• One Address, One Transaction: Once an address has been used for a transaction, any remaining funds should ideally be moved to another new address.
• Institutional Key Rotation: Infrastructure providers, major exchanges, and Layer-2 security councils are encouraged to rotate their public keys more frequently or switch to hash-based schemes.
Drake emphasized that this is a measured precaution, not a call to panic.
Vitalik Buterin’s Response: Be Alert to Technical Risks
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin agrees on the urgency of strengthening defenses. He added that this AI threat could even affect lattice-based cryptography, which has long been touted as resistant to quantum attacks. Therefore, Ethereum is beginning to explore purer and simpler hash-based cryptographic approaches.
However, Vitalik also offered an important note regarding the process of moving funds:
“Be careful when migrating. Personally, I’ve lost more assets due to technical errors during migrations than the total losses from all the hacks I’ve ever experienced.”
Lessons for Users
The threat to ECDSA has not materialized yet. However, these developments are a reminder that blockchain security is an ongoing process of adaptation.
For everyday users and institutions alike, building disciplined wallet management habits and using fresh addresses are small but crucial steps for the long term.
What is your current wallet management strategy? Have you started separating transaction addresses from storage addresses?
