In recent days, wallets linked to the U.S. government transferred more than a billion dollars’ worth of Bitcoin. These aren’t small transactions. We’re talking about thousands of coins that were once confiscated after the 2016 Bitfinex hack.
According to blockchain analytics, around 17,000 BTC left over the course of several days. Some were sent to Coinbase Prime, while others went to new addresses with no public labels. At current prices, the total exceeded $1.5 billion.
The market immediately grew tense. Bitcoin was hovering around $82,000 during those days, and any major move by large holders raises questions. Especially when it involves a government that remains one of the largest BTC holders.
There’s an important point. Back in 2025, an executive order was issued to establish a strategic Bitcoin reserve. Under it, confiscated coins must not be sold—they must be held. Transfers to Coinbase Prime don’t mean an automatic sale. The platform also offers custodial services. So the coins may simply have been moved for easier storage or accounting.
But markets don’t like uncertainty. When billion-dollar transactions show up on screen, people start weighing the potential risks. If even some of these coins are eventually put up for sale, supply will increase. And the market has already seen major liquidations, especially in Ethereum.
On the other hand, the fact that the government continues to actively manage these assets and isn’t in a hurry to distribute them also says something. Bitcoin has long been more than just “confiscated assets” to be converted into dollars as quickly as possible.
So far, there have been no official statements about any sales. There’s only on-chain activity and the usual speculation around it.
What happens next depends on where these coins ultimately go and how the market reacts. For now, Bitcoin is holding around $82,000. But large government transfers are always a reason to keep a closer eye on $BTC.
Do you think this is just a technical reshuffle or preparation for something bigger?
