There have been many “pumps” in cryptocurrency history, but the $XRP (Ripple) rally at the turn of 2017–2018 was in a league of its own. Over 12 months, the coin posted phenomenal growth of more than 38,000% (and by some metrics, factoring in the March low, as much as 76,700%), forever etching itself into the textbooks of crypto trading.

• January 2017: XRP trades at around $0.006. The market sees the token as a “stable but boring” asset for interbank settlements.

• Spring 2017 (First wave): In March, XRP breaks out of a 36-week consolidation. Against the backdrop of news about Ripple partnering with a consortium of Japanese and South Korean banks, its price surges to $0.03, then $0.05, and breaks through $0.20–$0.30 by May. The asset’s market capitalization exceeds $8.5 billion, and XRP briefly knocks Ethereum out of second place in the CoinMarketCap rankings.

• December 2017 – January 2018 (Parabolic explosion): The real frenzy began in December, when the coin surged 730% in a month. On January 4, 2018, exchanges recorded its all-time high (ATH) of $3.84.

A fact for investors: A modest $1,000 investment made at the beginning of 2017 turned into $380,000–$1,100,000 at the peak (depending on the entry point). Paired with $BTC , the asset rose 57-fold in a quarter.

🔑 Three key triggers behind the insane growth

1. The banking narrative and the “SWIFT killer”: In 2017, media outlets widely promoted the idea that major financial institutions would replace traditional bank transfers with Ripple’s xCurrent technology. Retail investors believed they were buying a stake in “the future of global banking.”

2. The Asian FOMO effect: South Korean and Japanese traders accounted for most of the trading volume. On Korean exchanges (such as Bithumb), a local supply shortage (the “kimchi premium”) drove the price of $XRP above $4.50.

3. The era of penny coins: For millions of newcomers who entered the market in late 2017, Bitcoin at $15,000–$19,000 seemed too expensive. People searched for “cheap coins that cost a cent,” sincerely believing XRP could match Bitcoin’s price and rise to thousands of dollars per coin (ignoring the supply of billions of tokens).

The parabolic rise ended in an equally rapid, prolonged decline. By the summer of 2018, XRP had fallen by more than 80%, followed by a multi-year crypto winter and a legal battle with the SEC.

The main anomaly with XRP is that while BTC and ETH reached new all-time highs in subsequent cycles, XRP’s ATH of $3.84 has remained unbeaten for many years.
