#SolanaPlansToCutBlockTimesTo200ms
Key details
Current status: The target slot time is already 250 ms on mainnet (activated on September 18, 2026). Previous steps were:
400 ms → 350 ms (August 21, epoch 1020)
350 ms → 300 ms (August 28, epoch 1024)
300 ms → 250 ms (September 18, epoch 1037)
Solana
Final step: Reduce to 200 ms via SIMD-0525. The feature gate activates at the beginning of an epoch, and the new slot time takes effect at the beginning of the following epoch. It is scheduled to launch at the beginning of epoch 1053, expected to be around 15:00 UTC on Friday, October 9, 2026.
Coindesk
The feature is already implemented on the devnet and testnet networks.
What this means
More frequent blocks: The target is 5 slots per second (compared with 2.5 at the original 400 ms slot time).
Overall throughput will remain roughly the same: Compute units per block are reduced proportionally (to about 30 million at 200 ms, down from 37.5 million at 250 ms), so total processing capacity will not increase.
Benefits: Lower confirmation latency, fresher state for trading and DeFi applications, tighter spreads for market makers, and a shorter leader monopoly period (improving censorship resistance and fairness). Epoch duration (set at 432,000 slots) will decrease to about 24 hours.
