Bad news has run its course, but technicals are quietly turning bullish—$2.16 billion in options expire tomorrow, and tonight could be October’s most volatile night
What happened:
1. Greeks.live: Around $2.16 billion in BTC/ETH options expire on October 9. BTC’s max pain is $84,000 (above the current price), while ETH’s is $2,650. I covered this in an earlier update on October 6; this is a follow-up tracking the 24 hours before expiry.
2. Analyst Ali Martinez reported that after BTC pulled back 5.55% from its October 5 high, the 4-hour TD Sequential flashed a buy signal. ETH flashed the same signal after falling 7.36%, and XRP did as well after dropping from $1.53 to $1.39.
3. COINOTAG cited the analyst: BTC’s hourly TD indicator turned bullish near the $83,000 support level, while a sell signal from the same indicator the previous day had accurately anticipated this pullback.
Market snapshot: BTC was trading at around $82,800 early today, down about 1.5% over 24 hours (range: $82,318–$83,994).
What to make of it: The two signals make for an interesting combination. On the options side, BTC’s $84,000 max pain is above the current price, so under the “magnet effect” logic, there may be upward price pressure ahead of settlement. On the technical side, a TD buy signal only indicates that short-term momentum may be fading; it doesn’t mean the trend has reversed. With the expiry window running from tonight into tomorrow, volatility is likely to be amplified. This is especially tough for highly leveraged traders: the buy signal could lure them in just before expiry volatility triggers stop-losses, and betting the wrong way could mean a double hit. Going forward, watch whether BTC can hold $83,000 support; the $84,000 level and above may act as resistance due to max pain. For ETH, watch whether it can reclaim $2,620–$2,650. It’s safer to distinguish between the two scenarios before acting than to chase signals.
