Cointelegraph reportedly seeking a buyer after Google penalty, traffic plunges 80%

According to an exclusive report by CoinDesk, cryptocurrency media outlet Cointelegraph, known for its cartoon-style illustrations, is looking for a buyer. The information came from a person familiar with the matter, who did not disclose Cointelegraph’s asking price. Cointelegraph did not immediately respond to CoinDesk’s request for comment.

Organic traffic plunges about 80% after Google manual action

CoinDesk reported that Google imposed a manual action on Cointelegraph in October 2025, causing the website to disappear from Google search results and its organic search traffic to fall by about 80%. Before that, Cointelegraph’s website suffered a frontend attack in June 2025, which displayed a fake airdrop phishing pop-up.

According to Similarweb data cited by CoinDesk, Cointelegraph’s website had more than 12 million monthly visits in December 2024. By September 1 this year, monthly visits had fallen to just over 700,000. CoinDesk also noted that cryptocurrency prices have remained depressed and range-bound for an extended period, shifting readers’ attention away from crypto news and affecting multiple digital asset news outlets.

Cointelegraph was founded in 2013 and currently has more than 200 employees, according to its LinkedIn page. CoinDesk reported that Luna Media Corporation acquired Cointelegraph’s Middle East and North Africa (MENA) business in July 2022 to expand its global and regional operations.
