El Salvador’s 7,794 Bitcoin: No More Buying with Public Funds
The IMF’s waiver for El Salvador this time was specifically about the cap on “voluntary Bitcoin accumulation by the public sector”: the country failed to comply, but the board let it slide, releasing about $138 million on October 1 as planned. The price is spelled out in the documents: beyond registered donations, no further Bitcoin accumulation is expected.
The country now holds about 7,794 Bitcoin, worth roughly $646 million at Binance’s current price of $82,900—about 4.7 times the size of this disbursement. That’s a sizable position, but donations are now the only way it can grow; the government has been barred from buying with its own funds.
The next review will hinge on two things: whether the source of every newly added Bitcoin can be clearly accounted for, and whether the government has fully divested its remaining stake in the Chivo wallet. If it can’t provide clear answers, it will have to seek another waiver to receive the next disbursement.
I see this as a country’s buying pressure being locked in—not a reason to panic over bad news, or chase the price over good news.
