$OP fell 10% in a day, and there’s only one reason: Abstract, backed by Pudgy Penguins, announced it was shutting down—the second Ethereum L2 to die in seven days.
Put simply, L2s are now a graveyard of shared bikes for the crypto world.
You guys should know the script these L2s follow by now: announce “revolutionary scaling” → launch a token → attract hundreds of thousands of airdrop farmers → enjoy impressive TVL for two weeks → watch the token price steadily slide → the team says it’s “focused on building for the long term” → then vanishes. Abstract had Pudgy behind it, one of the biggest names in the NFT world, and even a full-on marketing blitz couldn’t save it. I have to say, marketing isn’t the problem. Apart from people farming airdrops, nobody was actually using the chain.
In my opinion, L2s are being weeded out in batches, and that’s actually a good thing. Back when hundreds of chains were competing, 90% of them died, and the survivors became valuable. From now on, when you see “new L2 mainnet launches,” ask three questions first: Who’s using it? Where does the revenue come from? Who would care if it shut down?
My conclusion: I’m staying away from L2 tokens for now. Let’s see which chain can generate real revenue first.
What do you think? Do L2s still have a chance? Let’s talk in the comments 👇
