Bitcoin is down 2.56% to $83,900, and Ethereum is down 4.58%. The market is broadly down today.

Among coins with trading volumes above $15 million, only three are up; everything else is in the red. Gains among the top performers in this extreme market are more meaningful than usual, but the risks are also higher.

NMR is up 39.63%, with $45.9 million in trading volume. Numerai is a crowdsourced hedge fund where data scientists stake NMR to submit predictive models. I couldn’t find any new announcements today. The rise appears to be driven by structural factors, such as its fixed supply cap of 11 million tokens and the team’s ongoing buybacks. I should mention that at noon I ruled it out because I thought it was a one-day spike, but it’s still edging higher now. I was wrong about that.

ORCA is up 12.70%, with $47.9 million in trading volume. Following up on what I said at noon: I found that it was being driven by a short squeeze, and explicitly said I would only watch it. The price has now fallen from 3.184 to 2.867, a pullback of about 10%. The post-squeeze retracement has begun, so that call has played out.

SAND is up 8.60%, with $21.9 million in trading volume. It’s the only one of the three with a clear product catalyst: The Sandbox’s Studio tools are set to launch publicly in October, a concrete development that could boost creator activity and ecosystem engagement. It had previously fallen for a while following the August cross-chain bridge incident, so this looks like a recovery.

My view is straightforward: coins that can rise while the broader market is down 2.5% show that money is flowing in against the trend, and they’re worth keeping track of. But of the three, NMR is driven by structural factors and ORCA by a squeeze; only SAND has a product catalyst. If choosing one, go with the one backed by the most tangible driver. One reminder: in a broadly declining market, even an individual coin’s strength can easily be dragged down by the wider market, so keep position sizes under control.
