A lot of people ask me: Why does BTC keep moving sideways in a certain range without breaking out?

Today, I’ll explain a framework institutions actually use—the positive and negative Gamma ranges.

BTC is currently trading around $84,208. This isn’t random.

【What is a Gamma range?】

To maintain their hedges, options market makers (MMs) aggressively trade in the opposite direction in high-Gamma ranges: when the price rises, they sell; when it falls, they buy. The result is that the price gets pinned in that range like a magnet. This is called a “positive Gamma range,” or a Gamma Pin.

A negative Gamma range is the opposite. Market makers hedge in the same direction as the price: when it rises, they push it higher; when it falls, they drive it lower. This is fertile ground for volatility to accelerate and trends to erupt.

【How do you identify one?】

Focus on two things: first, the strike prices where options open interest (Max OI) is concentrated—those are the Gamma magnets. Second, the structure of current implied volatility (IV). Compressed IV + sideways price action = a typical sign of a positive Gamma range.

Options OI is currently heavily concentrated around BTC $84,000, putting enormous hedging pressure on market makers. This is the current Gamma Pin zone—a high-probability area for fake breakouts in either direction in the short term. It’s a trap, not a signal.

【Practical takeaways】

Within a positive Gamma range: don’t chase breakouts; wait for a reversion. If the price spikes or plunges but there’s no follow-through in volume, it’s probably a fake move. Wait for it to return to the crowded zone before assessing direction.

When a negative Gamma range appears (IV suddenly surges and price decisively leaves the crowded zone), that’s the starting point of a real breakout. Follow the move instead of waiting for a pullback.

In institutional eyes, the easiest mistake for retail traders to make is treating a fake breakout in a positive Gamma range as a trend signal—chasing in, getting squeezed out, chasing again, and getting squeezed out again.

I’ve seen this happen far too many times.
