The cat-themed meme coin $ZCAT on Solana surged earlier today, gaining more than 76% in 24 hours and reaching a market cap of over $68 million. Its name borrows the privacy concept of $ZEC (Zcash), and its mascot is a cat with a brown paper bag over its head, playing on the idea of “you can’t see who I am.” There’s also a bit of a mechanism behind it: each trade and transfer is taxed at around 3%, and the proceeds are used to buy bridged $ZEC on Solana, which is then airdropped to holders—essentially, everyone pools their money to accumulate tokens.
A couple of thoughts of my own. This combination of meme, concept, and airdrop rewards can certainly draw attention and money in the short term, but that 3% tax is a real friction cost: the more often you trade, the more it eats into your holdings. And most meme coins don’t have much practical use; their prices are held up entirely by sentiment and narratives. They’re well known for their volatility, and sharp rises and falls in a single day are nothing unusual. There’s nothing wrong with watching from the sidelines, but if you’re thinking of getting involved, first consider whether you can stomach the roller-coaster ride. Keep your position small, and you’ll have more peace of mind.
