Just came across some fresh fundraising news and wanted to share a few thoughts.

Token issuance and governance platform Umia has raised $6.11 million—not through the usual private placement route, but via a seven-day auction. The auction valued the project at $18 million on a fully diluted basis, with 17.3 million tokens sold, representing 34.6% of the total supply. About 45% of the funds came from institutions, with ten funds participating in total. The list includes names like Galaxy Ventures and Digital Currency Group.

The most noteworthy detail: the tokens sold in the auction began circulating upon issuance, with no lockup.

Now, looking at the price, $UMIA is currently around $0.68, putting its fully diluted valuation at close to $34 million. The auction price implied an $18 million valuation, and now it’s nearing double that.

Honestly, this script feels familiar. Headlines about valuations doubling always grab attention, but break down the numbers: 34.6% of the tokens started circulating at issuance, with no lockup, and nearly half of that $6.11 million came from institutions that bought in at the auction valuation. The market is now valuing the project at almost twice that level, and all those paper gains are right out in the open. People see the words “institutional investors are in” and get carried away, thinking that if the big players are making money, they can at least get a little too. But they rarely stop to ask: What did those investors pay, and what are you paying? When there are no lockups on the circulating supply, sentiment can send valuations soaring. Haven’t we seen this kind of thing enough times?

A level-headed take: with a token launch where tokens circulate immediately and the valuation quickly rises well above the auction price, there may be plenty of excitement—but whether the price can hold ultimately depends on actual turnover in the circulating supply and how well the market absorbs those tokens, not the valuation figure in the headline. It’s fine to watch the action, but don’t get carried away by the word “double.”
