The Nikkei touched 70,000 but couldn’t hold it; oil retreats, October rate-hike odds still around one in five.

As of 16:06 JST. The Nikkei Average closed at 69,946.86, up 1,637.40 (+2.40%). It reached 70,037.61 in the morning session, with a high of 70,072.13, then gave back gains in the afternoon and failed to hold 70,000. Semiconductor stocks led the gains: Advantest (TSE: 6857) and Tokyo Electron (TSE: 8035). TSMC (TWSE: 2330) closed at NT$2,575, up 3%, after reaching NT$2,580 intraday; single source. Mainland China and Hong Kong markets, and South Korea, are closed through 10/8.

Saudi Aramco (TADAWUL: 2222) set its November Arab Light OSP for Asia at a $5 discount to Oman/Dubai, down another $3 month over month and the widest discount since June 2020; a survey had expected an increase. Prices for medium and heavy grades to Asia were each cut by $5. Europe/Northwest was raised by $3; prices to the US were unchanged. OPEC+ maintained its November quotas. Brent was around $101.5–101.7 and WTI around $90.0–90.2, both below Friday’s settlements of $102.25/$91.11. On Friday, the G7 agreed to release 100 million barrels of diesel and crude oil; Japanese officials said there are no plans for a new release from national reserves for now.

The 10-year US Treasury yield was around 5.26–5.28%. Reuters, citing CME: October rate-hike odds are around 22% (about 64% a week ago), and December odds around 87%. Don’t conflate this with the 18% figure from another tool on Friday. ISM services data is due tonight at 23:00 JST; consensus is 55.0 versus 55.4 in August.

Bitcoin was around $85,800–86,300. The 10/1 spot ETF inflow of $102.7 million is confirmed; figures for 10/2 are not yet aligned across two sources, so marked unverified.
