IMF Waiver for El Salvador: Funds Arrive

On October 1, the IMF completed the second and third reviews of El Salvador’s EFF arrangement in the U.S. Eastern Time zone, immediately releasing about US$138 million (approximately SDR 101.96 million). The full package is about US$1.4 billion over 40 months; it was approved in February 2025. Performance criteria related to currency purchases were not met, so the Board granted a waiver. The conditions include that majority control of the Chivo wallet has been transferred to the private sector, and that apart from already registered donations, public funds will no longer be used to accumulate coins.

The money is in, but it’s not a green light to keep hoarding. The waiver is a correction: reducing the country’s direct involvement in bitcoin activities and improving transparency of public holdings.

I’ll keep waiting for Bitcoin to pull back and hold steady before gradually adding—won’t treat this disbursement as a bullish signal to chase higher.
