The “scenic spots” that are hottest on the National Day Expressway this year are called service areas.

This year’s traffic jams on the highway have come up with new tricks:
① Someone set up a small table on the highway to brew tea—then they start a picnic right there on the spot
② Pull over to stretch, walk their dogs, and do exercises—full “coping set” to make the best of hardship
③ The most painful one for EV owners: charging at the service area requires taking a number, and the queue reached No. 99. They had to hard-wait for more than five hours just to get charged

Even crazier: a bunch of “big brained” people tried to avoid the Oct 1 peak by leaving the night before—on Sep 30—and as a result, they all got stuck on the same road anyway—smart people stuck behind smart people.

Honestly, everyone complains about traffic jams every year, yet it still happens—because people are really itching to get out and have fun. But looking at these iconic scenes of making do with hardship, it feels oddly human: when the road is blocked, there’s still plenty of hot tea and watermelon. The mindset is smoother than the road conditions. With a few days left in the holiday, before you set off, check ticket availability and queue status for charging stations—it’s really more effective than waking up three hours earlier.
