US Retail Traders Are About to Get Triple-Leveraged Bitcoin in Their Brokerage Accounts
The SEC has cleared a new category of US-listed products that could give retail investors 3x daily exposure to Bitcoin and Ether through a normal brokerage account.
Here’s what happened: on October 2, the SEC approved a Cboe BZX rule change covering six leveraged exchange-traded products from Volatility Shares’ VS Trust. The lineup includes Bitcoin, Ether, gold, silver, crude oil and natural gas.
The Bitcoin and Ether products are designed to use regulated CME futures and target three times the daily move of their respective reference assets. But they aren't trading just yet. Each product still needs an effective S-1 registration before launch, and no specific trading date has been announced.
The bigger change is accessibility. US traders have traditionally used margin, offshore derivatives or other leveraged instruments to get amplified crypto exposure. A regulated exchange-listed wrapper could make that strategy much easier to access.
But 3x daily exposure doesn't mean an investor simply gets three times Bitcoin's return over a longer period. Daily resets can create significant differences, especially when the underlying market is volatile and moves back and forth.
So the real question may be less about access and more about understanding the product.
Will regulated leveraged crypto ETPs make this type of trading safer, or simply make it easier to access?
