$NEAR in the past 24 hours fell by about 8.7%. Many headlines casually wrote “NEAR has been hacked.” It’s convenient—and also gets things wrong.

The problem was with the cross-chain deposit/withdrawal infrastructure of NEAR Intents and contract interaction. The initial loss was about $3.8 million. A NEAR co-founder said the impact was limited to USDT on the BSC; NEAR mainnet’s block production and transactions were not interrupted. The platform has been restored. A small number of routes were still restricted for a time, and the team has pledged full reimbursement.

But “the mainnet is fine” isn’t a free pass. Intents processes over $4 billion in transactions and payments each month and is the front-facing “abstract narrative” for the NEAR chain. The $3.8 million didn’t hurt the mainnet—but the discount in trust has already been transmitted to NEAR. What matters now isn’t guessing whether $4.8 is the bottom. More important is waiting for a clear post-incident review that explains responsibility boundaries, and whether the cross-chain volume after recovery can return.
