BTC has just delivered its strongest Q3 in nine years, with the quarter up 43%—but the money already isn’t satisfied with just “sipping soup” alongside the king. The altcoin season index has climbed from 23 to 61 in a single month.
What’s happening: CoinMarketCap’s altcoin season index read 61 on October 1 (the official line is 75—so it hasn’t arrived yet). BTC’s market share has slipped to 58.6%, ETH holds at 11.5%, and the remaining 30% is all altcoins. Santiment data shows that altcoins have gained a combined 38% since June, and total market cap has returned to $1.16 trillion. Glassnode is even more direct: altcoin spot trading volume is now 4x BTC’s, hitting a new intra-year high. In futures open interest, altcoins account for 41%. Last week, LINK, ICP, and TAO drove the “compute” segment up 9.5% over 24 hours, and among the 100 constituent coins, 93 were up.
How to look at it: This round doesn’t look like the old “everyone gets to the party” kind of season. Talos data says the top ten altcoins have taken 80% of total altcoin market cap—capital is clustering, not casting a wide net. It’s the narrative-driven ones (upgrades, revenue, institutional adoption) that are eating; DOGE and PEPE, for example, actually fell by about 10% to 20% last week. On the other side, you also have to watch: analyst Darkfost found that altcoin exchange deposit volumes have already returned to the level seen before the peak in October 2025. Altcoins with 87% of them are standing above the 200-day moving average. “Frenzied sentiment is spreading—historically, this kind of dynamic never lasts.” My takeaway is the “selected altcoin season”: the index hasn’t reached the 75 official line, and BTC is stuck in a 0.82–0.85 million range consolidation. In this kind of environment, chasing lesser-known coins creates a completely asymmetric payoff-risk profile. If you really want to participate, first understand the logic behind why they’re rising; if you can’t understand the rally, the gains at the end are someone else borrowing from you.
