$BTC standing in the worst month of Web3: $766 million wiped out in just September.

CertiK has just released: September 2026 saw $766.4 million in confirmed losses from verified attacks and scams—the highest level of the year and also the month with the most incidents in 2026. According to Foresight News, the two biggest cases are Bitget exchange losing $387.5 million and Bitcoin’s sidechain Liquid Network losing about $318.6 million.

Both cases were publicly confirmed by the relevant parties within the same month. About $270.6 million of that amount was recovered or frozen—more than one-third of the total losses.

The categories with the biggest losses are not smart contracts, but centralized exchanges, followed by incidents on the mainnet layer.

Holding coins on a major exchange doesn’t mean absolute safety. The top two cases on the leaderboard are proof.

Something to watch: whether CertiK will release the full Q3 report in the next few days, and what direction the October figure will take.
