🚨 ILLINOIS PROPOSES A 0.2% CRYPTO TAX — STABLECOINS ARE TAXED, NFTs ARE EXEMPT
Illinois has just released a draft regulation on a 0.2% tax rate for crypto.
Notably, stablecoins fall under taxable items, while NFTs are proposed to be exempt.
Most DeFi transactions are also exempt if no protocol fee is generated.
Personal view:
I think the noteworthy point is how Illinois is classifying each type of crypto activity rather than applying a uniform approach across the entire market.
Including stablecoins in the taxable category could have a significant impact because this is a very commonly used asset for trading and moving capital.
Meanwhile, the exemption for most DeFi transactions shows that the regulator is still trying to distinguish between different operating models.
This is only a draft, so the final regulations may still change.
For crypto, I’ll keep tracking how Illinois handles stablecoins and DeFi, as this could be an important precedent for digital asset policy in the U.S.
