Airdrop season is in full swing, as apps, protocols, and other projects take advantage of signs of an impending bear market to drop tokens — and potentially reward millions of crypto users in the process. this progress.
Airdrops are often a way for a project to reward early users and contributors by giving them a portion of newly released tokens, while also spreading the tokens widely for decentralized governance.
When it comes to blockchain networks and gaming-specific tokens, there are going to be some pretty exciting airdrops in the coming months. Here's what's coming up for gamers —there may still be time to get in and win some tokens in the near future.
Pixels
Pixels is currently the most active game on Axie Infinity's Ronin sidechain for Ethereum. The project ended its “play-to-airdrop” campaign on January 19. The top 7,000 players on the leaderboard will be eligible to receive tokens, after checking to eliminate airdrop manipulation bots, along with with 1,000 other random players who have reached a certain score threshold.
Another 20,000 players from the previous play-to-airdrop are also eligible. Barikowski said during a Jan. 17 livestream that the launch of the PIXEL token is “very close” and that there will be no other play-to-airdrop season before that. However, Pixels will give away NFTs and Ronin tokens before the official airdrop begins.
Portal
Portal is certainly one of the most high-profile airdrops of the future, although also controversial. This multi-chain game token is designed to bridge the gap between Web3 games on different blockchains, encouraging users to earn from airdrops by creating, sharing and interacting with content on X (Twitter) – already done in bulk.
That may be annoying but there's still a lot of hype surrounding what Portal is building. Most of the team members come from the Overlord and Creepz NFT teams at SuperDuper. They recruited the Rockstar Games co-founder and other advisors, and roped in many allies such as major talent agency WME and NFT marketplace Magic Eden.
Portal says the airdrop will take place in January following the recent presale and launch of the latest version of the Crystal Dash airdrop farming experience. However, near the end of the month, the project said it would launch a dashboard ahead of the upcoming airdrop. The dashboard is live, with clearer airdrop goals as of this writing.
Heroes of Mavia
Heroes of Mavia is a Clash of Clans-like mobile game from Skrice Studios backed by Binance Labs, recently launched on iOS and Android ahead of the planned airdrop. According to the creators' announcement, the MAVIA token airdrop will take place on February 6 for 100,000 qualified users who registered before the limit is reached.
Saga Protocol
Saga is a new blockchain network designed primarily for gaming, so one possible way to earn a portion of the upcoming airdrop is by playing games. In December, Saga launched a “play-to-airdrop” campaign on several games running on the testnet. Those who top the leaderboard will earn SAGA tokens.
In fact, Saga CEO Rebecca Liao has said that some gamers could eventually receive a “double airdrop,” as the game could also launch its own token and reward early adopters. Mainnet Saga is expected to launch in spring 2024 and more competitions will take place in the coming months.
Saga has also revealed that some users on Polygon, Avalanche, Cosmos, and Celestia will also be eligible to receive tokens in the airdrop. Furthermore, Saga is launching a “Three Kingdoms” play-to-airdrop campaign for games on Solana, Polygon and Avalanche, including heavy hitters like Parallel, Shrapnel and Gas Hero.
Nifty Island
Launching in open beta on January 17, Nifty Island is a new sandbox-style game that combines the feel of the creative modes of Animal Crossing, Roblox, and Fortnite, allowing players to customize their own island and Play with other users. The project offers a play-to-airdrop campaign with many different ways to earn ISLAND.
According to a tweet, Nifty Island will award points to users based on factors such as how much they play, how many players they refer, and what other NFT assets they own in the connected wallet. It's unclear when the drop will happen, but people are flocking to the game with the aim of getting a piece of the upcoming ISLAND launch.
Nyan Heroes
Hero shooter Solana Nyan Heroes, which features cats controlling giant mech suits, will launch into early access in February and launch a play-to-airdrop campaign alongside it. While there are no details yet, the Overwatch-like shooter is available in the Epic Games Store, awarding NYN tokens to early players. Nyan Heroes NFT owners will be eligible for even larger token rewards.
Apeiron
Along with Pixels, this is another game running on Axie Infinity's Ronin chain that is running an airdrop campaign. Apeiron is billed as a flashy combination of classic god games (like Populous) and a “roguelite” role-playing card experience, delivering a solid experience that requires careful strategy.
In January, Apeiron revealed a play-to-airdrop campaign that will award points to players of the Epic Games Store battle demo and look towards future ANIMA token drops, along with incentives for completing missions other or own certain NFTs.
WUFFI
WAX Blockchain is promoting an upcoming airdrop for a “gaming memecoin” called WUFFI, with a token called WUF. The airdrop will apparently start on WAX and then expand to Solana at some point.
WUF took a snapshot of eligible holders on January 31 before the first airdrop, but no date has been confirmed. Many games and applications on WAX have committed to supporting the upcoming token.
Notcoin
This potential upcoming airdrop is not 100% confirmed yet. Notcoin is a gaming project that runs on the Telegram messaging app and claims to have attracted more than 5 million users in just over a week. Those users frantically pressed the button to collectively “mint” more than 1 trillion Notcoins, as of the time of writing.
However, Notcoin is not a real cryptocurrency yet. But the TON Foundation, which oversees the network that Notcoin is building, said the team is planning to launch the token. It's a pretty good sign that some airdrops are being rolled out to early adopters, although no official criteria have been set as of yet.
The airdrops have been completed
Xai
Xai is a “layer 3” gaming network built on Arbitrum, itself a layer 2 Ethereum scaling network, and just launched its first airdrop on January 9. The drop was originally scheduled for December 27, but was then delayed to early January.
Created in partnership with Arbitrum developer Offchain Labs, Xai Network dropped its first XAI tokens to owners of certain NFT projects, along with Sentry node operators who purchased Sentry Keys. Ultimately, around $70 million in tokens were awarded in this first round, with the total value skyrocketing to $151 million the following week as XAI became more widely known. More rewards are expected in the “Season 2” airdrop in the future.
Mixmob
Gaming platform Mixmob on Solana launched an airdrop for its MXM token on February 1 following the launch of Racer 1, a card-based mobile racing game on iOS and Android. MixMob CEO Simon Vieira previously said the project will airdrop tokens to active community members and players who use the game's racing, referrals, staking and betting features. MixBot NFT owners will also be included.
Mixmob also plans to offer exclusive airdrops to Solana Saga phone owners, including exclusive tournaments and other perks for those users.
