Watching “Escape from Clone Island,” this old movie, the plot is really brainless. It feels like director Michael Bay initially tried to act cool and aloof, but couldn’t help himself—so he started building things up, blowing up buildings, cars, and smashing stuff.
But you can’t deny it: his handling of that sense of speed, collisions between large objects, and the sound effects—he really has an instinct for it.
What’s funny is that all the action shots are filmed from a low angle looking up from the ground. Is that his signature shot language? It also demands a lot from the actors—if you have, say, a double chin or bad-looking nostrils, you won’t get into his camera frame.
That kind of industrial, cement-like material feel in those huge spaces is still quite striking.
