The Bahamas accuses U.S. drug enforcement agents of illegal operations on its soil
The Bahamas has brought charges against agents of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for operating unlawfully within its territory, and presented the matter to the Trump administration last week, according to the country’s ambassador to the United States.
Wendell Jones, the Bahamas’ ambassador to the United States, said that Bahamian officials filed their complaint on Friday during a meeting with the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington.
The complaint could cast a shadow over law-enforcement cooperation between the two countries, at a time when a major drug-smuggling case before U.S. courts is shaping the political scene in the Bahamas.
Over the past 18 months, American investigators have brought charges against more than six Bahamian citizens, including prominent members of the police and the defense forces in the country.
