Banks move deposits on-chain, giving stablecoins a new competitor

A major UK bank has completed the world’s first cross-bank tokenized deposit transaction.$BTC

Lloyds, NatWest, and Barclays used it to complete two rounds of re-hypothecation lending; another group of simulated e-commerce payments involving HSBC. Smart contracts first lock the funds, and after receiving the goods or property transaction, they automatically release the loan.

Tokenized deposits are still money in bank accounts, and their legal status remains unchanged. USDC and USDT are issued by private companies, meaning the funds leave the traditional deposit system. As a result, the Bank of England is more inclined toward the former.

Will this cut into the institutional settlement scenarios for stablecoins? Possibly, but for now it’s still a pilot. The e-commerce tests don’t involve real goods delivery and aren’t open to the public.

The next verification question is already lined up: participating banks plan to issue three digital bonds in the first quarter of 2027 that can be used for tokenized deposit transactions and settlement.

Stablecoins still have public-chain liquidity, 24/7 trading, and cross-border composability. The bank version’s advantages are regulation, deposit relationships, and existing customers.

Whoever achieves cross-institution interoperability first and generates real trading volume will get the settlement gateway.
