On tokenization, Hong Kong is providing a timetable rather than just a concept: Eric Tsang Zhi-yu said that by the end of 2026, a trial of tokenizing Exchange Fund Bills would be rolled out.
The supporting measures are also scheduled within 2026—Clearing and Settlement (CMU) plans to establish a digital asset platform to provide end-to-end services such as the issuance and settlement of digital bonds. For issuers and counterparties tokenizing Hong Kong-dollar and U.S.-dollar assets, covering issuance, custody, and settlement, this is an expected window. For the secondary market, it will not produce tradeable instruments in the near term.
Assessment: If any part of the platform and bill trial is delayed within 2026, the credibility of this roadmap will be repriced.
