Bacteria can’t be killed? Try polymers instead?

Stanford Engineering used AI to screen 1.7 million-plus polymer candidates and narrowed it down to 10, designing them based on antimicrobial peptides’ “membrane disruption” approach: instead of entering the bacterial cells, they directly puncture the cell membrane. In the lab, they’re fully effective against E. coli; some are also tough on biofilms. They also show activity against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. Compared with peptides, polymers are more stable and easier to manufacture, and the paper was published in *Matter*.

Still, this is at the laboratory stage—not a newly approved drug, and don’t treat it as medical advice.
