Nvidia is at it again

On September 21, multiple media outlets reported that Nvidia plans to buy about $1.5 billion worth of shares in SB Energy ahead of its U.S. IPO. Combined with the investment announced in August, Nvidia’s total investment in SB Energy will reach about $3 billion. The latest reported transaction price is around 90% of the IPO offering price.

This is not a typical financial investment.

Behind SB Energy is SoftBank. The company focuses on data center and energy infrastructure. It is building a large AI data center campus in Ohio, U.S., where OpenAI will be an important customer. Planned computing capacity could reach up to 8 gigawatts. Nvidia injects capital while also locking in its own chips to be used in these data centers.

Sell the chips, build the data centers, and AI customers will rent computing capacity for the long term—Nvidia can then use equity investment to capture returns from infrastructure growth.

The chain is brilliant—and also very aggressive.

In the past, the market only focused on how many GPUs Nvidia sold. Now Nvidia is extending into the power, server-room, and computing-capacity leasing segments. The bottleneck in the AI industry has already started shifting from chip supply to power, land, grid-connection speed, and financing capability. Whoever can control these resources will be closer to the next profit center.

But the risks are just as glaring

SB Energy’s planned IPO valuation is about $50 billion. Rumors in the market suggest that the IPO timeline is already under scrutiny due to the valuation, capital expenditures, and customer concentration. The company has a large pipeline of projects, yet it is still in a heavy-asset construction phase, and will need to keep pouring in substantial funds. If OpenAI’s demand slows, data center construction and equipment procurement could be affected.

Nvidia’s calculation is clear. As AI demand continues to surge, the $1.5 billion investment today may secure scarce power and server-room resources. If the market begins to doubt the returns from AI infrastructure, Nvidia could also face investment impairment and pressure on capital being tied up.

The signal sent by this deal is very strong
The AI battle has entered the heavy-asset stage. Chips are just the starting point—power is the next card.
