From 400 ms to 250 ms: Solana’s multi-stage speed strategy
Solana didn’t jump from 400 ms to 250 ms overnight. Instead, it built a staged path to get there.
SIMD-0525 defines four reductions: 350 ms, 300 ms, 250 ms, and finally 200 ms. Each stage is constrained by specific features, allowing the network and its validators to adapt before the next reduction.
The 250 ms stage is now active on Solana mainnet, while the activation date for the final 200 ms stage on mainnet has not yet been confirmed. Binance News reported that the last step will depend on network performance, including validator stability.
The phased approach also changes other technical parameters. At 250 ms, the proposal sets a leader window of four slots at a nominal rate of one per second, compared to 1.6 seconds at 400 ms.
This makes the upgrade less tied to a single headline number and more focused on gradually shifting Solana’s timing architecture without making one huge leap.
The next metric is simple: whether the network can maintain tighter timing at scale.
