🇿🇦 South Africa wants to introduce cryptocurrencies under capital flow rules
South Africa is moving to list cryptocurrency assets within a cross-border capital flow framework, pointing to a major change in how international crypto movements are monitored.
In April 2026, the National Treasury will publish a draft set of capital flow management regulations to replace the 1961 Exchange Control Regulations. The proposals specifically address gaps related to cross-border cryptocurrency transactions.
The next step came in August, when the National Treasury and the South African Reserve Bank issued a draft guide to crypto assets, explaining how the proposed framework would work in practice.
The proposed system focuses on licensing, reporting, and supervising crypto activity across borders, rather than simply banning ownership of cryptocurrencies.
This is only a proposal—not a final crackdown on cryptocurrencies.
