📋 South Africa opens a new chapter in compliance regarding cryptocurrencies
South Africa is working to build a regulatory framework that could make cross-border transactions using cryptocurrencies clearer to financial authorities.
The draft published on August 3 outlines the proposed requirements related to licensing, powers, reporting, and administrative responsibilities for cross-border activity using cryptocurrencies.
This framework is designed to work alongside the existing oversight by the FSCA, the Financial Intelligence Centre, and SARS, rather than creating an entirely separate regulatory system for cryptocurrencies.
South Africa already regulates cryptocurrency activities within its financial services sector framework. The new proposals expand the scope of discussion to include the country’s capital flows system.
Public consultations on the draft remain open until September 30, 2026.
Final rules may still change after receiving feedback from stakeholders.
