🏦 ECB Launches Pontes: A New Settlement Route for Tokenised Assets
Europe’s tokenised financial markets now have a new connection to central bank money.
On September 21, 2026, the Eurosystem launched Pontes, connecting market distributed-ledger platforms with its TARGET payment infrastructure. Eligible institutions can use it to settle wholesale transactions in tokenised assets using central bank money, with further improvements being introduced in stages.
This launch concerns wholesale financial markets. The retail digital euro for everyday payments remains a separate project under development.
🔎 My take: issuing a tokenised bond solves only part of the problem. Institutions also need a dependable way to exchange that security for cash, with clear settlement rules and systems that work together.
Pontes could make digital securities more practical by connecting their payment side to established central bank infrastructure. The commercial benefit will depend on whether that connection reduces manual work, operational friction and the overall cost of completing transactions.
I would watch regular settlement volumes, repeat issuers and evidence that participants are moving everyday business onto the service. Those measures would reveal more about adoption than launch announcements alone.
The staged rollout also means available features and operating arrangements will remain important for institutions deciding how to use it.
Could central bank settlement help tokenised bonds reach wider institutional use?
