BTC breaks through $85,000.
The ECB has launched Pontes.
What is Pontes? It’s the infrastructure the ECB uses to put the euro directly on the blockchain—banks can settle tokenized asset trades with real central bank reserves, without having to route through stablecoins.
Deutsche Bank, Santander, and Clearstream were among the first to join. Thirteen banks, four DLT operators—real trades started today.
My first reaction to this news was: the central bank is trying to take ground from Circle and Tether.
But after thinking it through, the ECB is very clear about this: Pontes is for the wholesale side, targeting banks and institutions; the retail digital euro still won’t begin pilots until 2027.
Stablecoins like USDC are for payments and trading, and they don’t directly conflict with Pontes’ use cases.
A more accurate way to understand it is this: the ECB is building a risk-free monetary anchor for tokenized assets—just like in the real world where bank settlements rely on central bank reserves, tokenized asset settlement on-chain now has such an anchor too.
This is a real infrastructure positive for the entire RWA space, not just a narrative.
On the same day, Washington granted a 5-year exemption for tokenized U.S. stocks; the Tokyo Huaxia Fund completed subscription and redemption for a Hong Kong dollar stablecoin fund; and Frankfurt saw the ECB launch Pontes.
Three time zones, same direction.
When do you think this wave of infrastructure build-out will start showing up in token prices?
