Zcash developers have reached an agreement to target November 5, 2026 to activate the NU7 mainnet. But the date is not final yet: the test network is planned to be activated on October 6, with a final decision about the mainnet expected on October 20.
The key advantage is speed. NU7 will reduce the targeted block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, which could make ZEC confirmation-based operations noticeably faster.
The upgrade will also disable issuance transactions 4 and integrate Zcash’s network sustainability mechanism. Wallets are not expected to require major changes, while smart contracts, indexes, and demo interfaces may need updates.
My opinion: NU7 is less about creating flashy new transaction features and more about improving the network’s underlying operating model.
Faster blocks will reduce settlement wait time, while keeping the current halving schedule direction unchanged in monetary policy. The harder question is whether better infrastructure will translate into greater real-world usage.
