Circle’s Arc chain launched today. Robinhood says that in the future, they’ll support direct deposits and withdrawals of USDC. — The same day, BlackRock, Visa, and Mastercard are validators on this chain.
With these companies together… my first reaction was, “This isn’t crypto; traditional finance has just swapped the wrapper.”
But when I thought it through, it’s actually not a bad thing.
Arc’s logic is that you pay transaction fees with USDC, so you don’t need to buy Gas specifically. This might seem small, but for ordinary people it used to mean that every time you used a chain, you had to go buy some odd token just to be able to operate—now you don’t.
Robinhood has 30 million users. After today, when they move USDC onto the chain, it’s like making a transfer—no one will ask them, “Do you have Arc Gas?”
I don’t know whether this chain will ultimately succeed. But today’s lineup—Circle + Robinhood + BlackRock—if this still can’t get it going, I don’t know what could.
I didn’t catch the previous wave of Robinhood Chain. What do you think about this time?
