Market expectations for a 25-basis-point rate hike have clearly warmed up. The latest Reuters poll shows that 85% of economists expect the Federal Reserve to raise rates by 25 basis points at this meeting. In recent days, renewed inflation pressures, higher oil prices, and the resilience of the U.S. economy have all led the market to raise its expectations for tighter monetary policy.
So what’s really worth watching tonight may not be whether there will be a rate hike, but:

I’m more focused on three things:
① A 25-basis-point rate hike + hawkish-leaning remarks
If the Fed signals that it may still continue to hike rates in the future, the US dollar and US Treasury yields may continue to be supported.
For BTC, ETH, and risk assets, near-term pressure may increase further.
② A 25-basis-point rate hike + neutral-leaning remarks
In this scenario, it could even lead to a “negative surprise that fails to materialize.”
Because the market has already priced in the rate hike expectations ahead of time.
If, in the end, it isn’t more hawkish than what the market expects, BTC could even fall first and then rebound.
③ Unexpectedly no rate hike
This is the real expectation gap.
If the Fed ultimately chooses to stay put, the market may reprice the future rate path again, and the US dollar, US Treasury yields, and even the crypto market could all see significant short-term volatility.
