Lisk is one of the oldest blockchain projects in the cryptocurrency industry, originally launched in 2016. The native token of the network is LSK. Lisk’s original vision was to make blockchain development accessible to the millions of developers who already knew JavaScript. Instead of forcing developers to learn a new language like Solidity, Lisk allowed them to build decentralized applications on their own sidechains using JavaScript and TypeScript. Each application could run on its own blockchain connected to the Lisk mainchain, which was designed to reduce congestion and improve scalability.
For the first several years, Lisk focused on building a software development kit, or SDK, and improving developer tools. The network used a Delegated Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism where LSK holders vote for delegates who validate transactions and secure the network. Despite being an early mover, Lisk struggled to gain the same traction as Ethereum, Solana, and other newer Layer 1s. Criticism around slow development and limited adoption kept the project in the background for a long time.
In 2023, Lisk announced a major strategic pivot. Instead of continuing as an independent Layer 1, Lisk decided to become an Ethereum Layer 2 built on the OP Stack. This move allowed Lisk to leverage Optimism’s technology to provide fast, low-cost transactions while inheriting Ethereum’s security. The new Lisk L2 is EVM compatible, meaning any Ethereum dApp can deploy on it with minimal changes. The team’s focus also shifted toward emerging markets, real-world assets, and DePIN, with the goal of bringing blockchain adoption to regions like Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America.
Binance Listing
Lisk (LSK) was listed on Binance in early 2018, shortly after Binance itself launched. At the time of listing, LSK was made available for trading against BTC, ETH, and BNB pairs. Being listed on Binance during that period gave LSK significant visibility and liquidity. In 2024, when Lisk completed its token migration from the native Lisk chain to an ERC20 token on Ethereum, Binance supported the 1:1 migration for all users. Binance.US also listed LSK in August 2022, with deposits opening on August 23, 2022 and trading starting 24 hours later.
The role of the LSK token evolved with the L2 migration. LSK is now used to pay gas fees on the Lisk L2, to participate in governance, and to fund ecosystem grants and incentives for developers. A large portion of the supply was allocated to growing the new ecosystem.
While the Layer 2 market is extremely competitive, Lisk’s focus on accessibility and emerging market adoption gives it a unique position. If Lisk can execute on its roadmap, LSK may see renewed relevance as Ethereum scaling continues.
