Undoubtedly, one of the biggest highlights of the year so far was the appearance of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Only two weeks ago, the latest and most powerful version of the AI-powered generative chatbot, GPT-4, was released. But OpenAI is not stopping there.

According to a tweet from developer Siqi Chen, GPT-5 is on route to complete training by the end of this year, possibly obtaining a new milestone in the AI revolution – achieving AGI (Artificial General Intelligence).

i have been told that gpt5 is scheduled to complete training this december and that openai expects it to achieve agi.which means we will all hotly debate as to whether it actually achieves agi.which means it will.

AGI is a specific type of AI that aims to create machines or systems that can perform any intellectual task that a human can do. AGI focuses on creating intelligent systems, which can learn and adapt to new situations without being explicitly programmed to do so and can perform a wide range of cognitive tasks.

AI generally refers to machines or systems that can perform specific tasks that usually require human intelligence. These tasks may include recognizing speech, identifying images, or making recommendations based on data analysis.

If Chen claimed to be true and GPT-5 achieves AGI, productivity for AI-enabled processes would increase like never before. Consequently, it would save time and eliminate tedious work for people all around the world.

However, giving AI such power could bring potential and unknown consequences. Developer Harrison Kinsley took his stance to Twitter, claiming that GPT-5 (or any GPT) will not be able to achieve AGI. He also believes GPT uses a gradient descent method (commonly used to train machine learning models and neural networks) to optimize the model, thus making it highly unlikely to achieve AGI.

GPT-5 is not going to be AGI.It's almost certain that ~no~ GPT model will be AGI. It's highly unlikely any model optimized using methods we use today (gradient descent) will ever be AGI.The GPT models coming out will change the world for sure, but the over-hype is wild.

OpenAI predicted that GPT-4.5 will launch in September or October 2023 as an “intermediate version between GPT-4 and the upcoming GPT-5.” Only yesterday, global tech leaders, including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniacki, called through an open letter to halt AI development for at least six months. The letter states that AI labs are “locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one – not even their creators – can understand, predict, or reliably control.”
