Against the backdrop of continuous advancement of the on-chain cloud ecosystem on Filecoin Onchain Cloud (NeoCloud), the official has launched an IPFS-to-Filecoin migration tool and the Warm Storage service. Developers can seamlessly migrate pinned data hosted by IPFS hosting providers such as Pinata and Filebase to the Filecoin network while keeping the original CID unchanged, thereby obtaining on-chain verifiable storage proofs, lower overall costs, and data wallet ownership. This provides new storage options for Web3 projects, NFT metadata, and AI datasets.

What is the Filecoin Warm Storage migration service

Core goal of this toolset: migrate the IPFS data that you have already pinned (Pinned) to the Filecoin network. After the migration, the original CID remains completely unchanged. Existing IPFS gateway links, IPNS addresses, and NFT metadata links will all remain accessible without any need to modify your business code. At the same time, you’ll obtain on-chain, verifiable storage credentials—no longer relying solely on a third-party hosting provider’s backend dashboard to prove storage status.

The official design is geared toward an automated workflow: users can hand the migration task to AI coding agents like Claude or Cursor. The Agent reads the official runbook, iterates through your CID list, automatically completes the migration work, and outputs a migration result report. The CID validation step at the beginning is completely free and does not require binding a wallet.

Migrate IPFS data in four steps—first two steps are completely free

The entire migration workflow is divided into 4 core stages. The first two steps incur no cost.

  1. Submit the CID list

Paste the list of CIDs that need to be migrated into the web tool. The tool can directly pull all pinned CIDs from your hosting provider’s API. This stage only performs detection; it’s free throughout and does not require a wallet.

  2. Read and calculate

The system reads each CID from the public IPFS gateway and calculates the corresponding piece identifier on Filecoin. Data is not uploaded, and no charges are incurred—only capacity and cost estimation are performed.

  3. Wallet top-up and authorization

Deposit USDFC into an independent wallet for storage payment, and also prepare a small amount of FIL as gas fees. The deposited amount is also the maximum consumption limit for this task; it will not be deducted beyond that. The official strongly recommends using a dedicated migration wallet instead of your main wallet to avoid security risks caused by automated tasks.

  4. Submit migration on-chain

Your local machine streams the data directly to two storage service providers, completing on-chain submissions in batches. After the migration ends, it returns a block explorer link that can be opened directly in your browser, along with a complete summary of all datasets whose migration succeeded.

⚠️ Official special note: For large-scale archival, manual click-based operation is not recommended. It’s suitable for unattended automated Agent tasks. For data migrations exceeding 500GiB, please contact and coordinate with the official team in advance regarding storage resources.

Warm Storage’s four core advantages

1. CID remains completely unchanged; zero business changes

The data will not be re-chunked. All CID bytes remain exactly the same. Published links, IPNS records, and the access results of NFT metadata before and after migration are completely consistent—no changes needed to your business systems.

2. Highly competitive pricing, comes with double replicas

Warm Storage by default provides 2 data replicas. 2.50 USD per TiB per month; the two replicas total 4.55 USD / TiB / month. Compare to traditional IPFS hosting providers’ overage rates:

  • Filebase Pro overage: $15 / TiB / month, plus $0.015 / GB egress fee

  • Pinata Fiesta overage: $35 / TiB / month, $0.08 / GB egress fee

  • Pinata Picnic overage: $70 / TiB / month, $0.10 / GB egress fee

Filecoin Warm Storage has no data egress fee (Zero‑Egress). Reading data through any IPFS gateway does not incur extra charges—no tier/package bundles, and no minimum storage commitment.

3. On-chain proofs, not the service provider’s backend dashboard

The storage provider will periodically submit storage proofs on-chain. Users receive on-chain transaction receipts, without needing to rely on the service provider. Anyone can independently verify at any time whether the data is truly stored—solving the trust pain point of traditional hosting providers: “the backend shows pinned, but the data is actually lost.”

4. Data belongs to your wallet, not to the service provider account

No need to register a service provider account. Ownership of the dataset is bound to your wallet address. Payment is streamed directly from your wallet to the storage service provider. Read access does not depend on your private key— even if the wallet key is offline, the data can still be accessed by the entire network.

Migration eligibility constraints (explicitly stated by the official)

  1. Source data must be publicly readable

: CIDs must be retrievable from a public IPFS gateway. Private pinned accounts and permission-authenticated resources cannot be migrated with this tool.

  2. Single-file limit 1016MiB

: A single asset cannot exceed 1016MiB. Splitting files will change the CID, so the tool does not support splitting. Data sets composed of a large number of small files are not limited.

  3. Over 500GiB: please contact us in advance

: The Agent script itself has no hard limit on the number of CIDs, but for large-scale migrations, it’s recommended to coordinate storage resources in advance to avoid running out of resources mid-way.

  4. In Filecoin, piece identifiers are used internally to manage storage. For user business access, you still use the original CID as before—you don’t need to care about the piece ID.

  5. A CID that cannot be retrieved will not fail silently. The tool will output a list, and subsequent tasks can be retried.

Industry significance: Filecoin on-chain cloud moves toward commercial deployment

Warm Storage migration tool is an important product for Filecoin Onchain Cloud (NeoCloud) to move toward commercial deployment. In the past, many Web3 projects pinned NFT metadata and project static resources to centralized IPFS pinning service providers, facing risks such as package price increases, high data egress fees, account bans by providers, and the fact that data authenticity could only rely on the provider’s backend dashboard.

Filecoin Warm Storage provides an alternative: migrate existing, stored data from the IPFS ecosystem to the underlying decentralized Filecoin storage network. It preserves the IPFS usage experience, while also enabling on-chain verifiable storage, no data egress fees, and wallet ownership of the stored data. Driven by the incentive mechanism coming with FIP-0118, public archives, AI datasets, and Web3 project metadata each have a complete, deployable decentralized storage commercial stack.
