CPI MEETS EXPECTATIONS. CORE CPI DOESN’T.
🇺🇸 August U.S. CPI:
CPI YoY: 3.4% vs 3.4% est.
CPI MoM: 0.4% vs 0.4% est.
Core CPI YoY: 2.4% vs 2.4% est.
Core CPI MoM: 0.3% vs 0.2% est. 🔥
Headline inflation basically said “nothing to see here.”
Then Core CPI stepped in like:
“Actually… I have one more thing.”
PPI was hot at 5.4% YoY yesterday; today core CPI is even higher than forecast → the Fed story isn’t any easier to breathe for.
The market is pricing in about a 70% chance of a Fed hike of 25 bps at the 16/9 meeting.
ONE DECIMAL ABOVE FORECAST AND THE FED STARTS SWEATING.
