US raises long-dated Treasury buyback to $6 billion, but yields keep climbing
🏦 The US Treasury said it may repurchase up to $6 billion of 10–20 year coupon securities in the September 10 operation, triple the previous $2 billion level. The program is designed to support market liquidity and is not QE or an expansion of the Federal Reserve’s balance sheet.
📉 The new size still came in below part of Wall Street’s expectations, with some estimates around $7–10 billion. Long-dated Treasuries continued to sell off after the announcement, pushing the 10-year yield to around 4.85%, its highest area since late 2023.
📊 With more than 1 trillion of Treasuries traded daily and total US public debt above $40 trillion, the $6 billion operation remains relatively small. Its main impact is likely to be improved liquidity in older securities rather than a broader shift in long-term yield trends.
