I know a guy who used to work in real estate sales in Luohu. He was eloquent and could close the kind of client who’d make a deposit after just ten minutes of viewing a place. At the end of the year before last, he had saved up almost 400,000 yuan, originally planning to use it as a down payment. But then he caught that market rally, got carried away, threw everything in, and even used 5x leverage.

Back then he posted profit screenshots in the group chat every day, saying he was making more than he ever did in a whole year as a broker, and told us all to open accounts too. Everyone told him to stop, but he said the market was good and that if he didn’t take a shot, he’d be letting himself down.

Then came that weekend in April last year. BTC dropped two big red candles in a row, and he got liquidated. The whole 400,000 was gone, and he still owed another 70,000 or 80,000. That night he messaged me and didn’t say how much he lost—he just said, “The steamed buns seem sick. They won’t eat.” I froze for a second before realizing he thought he was talking about a cat, but really he was completely out of it.

After that, for about a month, he stopped updating moments and went silent in the chat groups. I heard he even deleted his trading software. We all thought he was done for, but then in August he suddenly showed up again. He didn’t say he’d turned things around; he just posted a photo of himself squatting near some construction site, holding a notebook, darkly tanned from the sun. Only later did we learn he’d gone to find a guy who worked in engineering projects, followed him around job sites to oversee progress, and got paid 300 yuan a day.

But the interesting part is that he actually opened a small position again: 5,000 USDT, no leverage, only spot BTC, swing trading, with at most two moves a month. He said the only thing that saved him then was the A4 sheet taped to the wall, on which he had handwritten: “Stay alive, don’t add to the position, and don’t rush to get back to break even.” Every time he got home, he would recite it to himself. He kept doing that for almost four months before his mindset finally settled down.

I saw him last month, and that 5,000 USDT had grown to a bit over 6,000. He laughed and said it still wasn’t enough to pay the interest, but at least he could finally sleep peacefully and didn’t have to wake up from dreams of candles on the liquidation day. One thing he said really stuck with me: rules aren’t there to make money; they’re there to keep you alive. Don’t die first, and only then can you talk about what comes next.

Do you know anyone around you who got wiped out, completely collapsed, and never started again? Or is it those who slowly claw their way back up who really count as having learned the lesson money teaches?
