OpenAI is at it again. This time it’s dropping $1 billion directly into cybersecurity 💰
Specifically, it’s subsidizing a security platform called Daybreak to help defenders buy time with AI
At the same time, it’s saying its own Astra model can already independently uncover unknown vulnerabilities and even turn them into real attacks
To put it simply: in the past, finding vulnerabilities meant security researchers staying up all night reading code
Now AI can find them on its own, and once it does, it can use them directly too. Both attackers and defenders are stunned
This is a double-edged sword: good people use it to reinforce the walls, bad people use it as a battering ram
A bit of background: as soon as Astra was released, it caught the attention of the security community, being billed as the first model with real-world hacking capabilities
In the past, AI vulnerability hunting was mostly theoretical demos; now it can directly produce usable attacks. That pace of evolution is pretty scary
OpenAI also knows full well that if defenders don’t get a boost, they simply can’t keep up with this speed
Why is it rushing to become a security vendor? The logic is actually pretty straightforward
