#NvidiaToAcquireHuggingFaceFor$12.9B
🚨 NVIDIA Is Making a $12.9B Bet on the Open AI Ecosystem
NVIDIA is no longer competing only through chips.
The company has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for about $12.93 billion, bringing one of the world’s biggest open-AI developer platforms much closer to the dominant supplier of AI computing hardware.
Hugging Face says its ecosystem is used by more than 18 million developers and hosts over 3 million models, alongside hundreds of thousands of datasets and AI applications.
Importantly, NVIDIA says Hugging Face will remain an open platform. Developers should still be able to choose their own models, frameworks, cloud providers and computing platforms — without being required to use NVIDIA hardware.
Why it matters:
NVIDIA already sits near the center of the AI infrastructure boom through its GPUs. Owning a major platform where developers discover, test and deploy AI models could expand its influence much further across the AI stack.
But that also puts more attention on one question: can Hugging Face remain genuinely hardware-neutral while being owned by NVIDIA?
The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals and other conditions.
This may turn out to be less about buying another AI company — and more about positioning NVIDIA closer to where the next generation of AI applications actually gets built.
Could open-source AI become NVIDIA’s next major growth layer beyond GPUs?
