Behind August’s Blowout Surge, the “Giant Whale” Quietly Scooped Up 60,000 Bitcoins

According to CryptoQuant data from August 1 to August 30: wallets holding more than 100 BTC increased by nearly 60,000 BTC. Valued at $78,000, that’s about $4.7 billion.
At the same time, mid-tier holders (1 to 100 BTC) sold about 33,000 BTC, and small retail holders (under 1 BTC) sold about 14,000 BTC. Combined, these two groups cashed out roughly 47,000 BTC—basically matching the amount the giant whale took in.
So during this August wave—the strongest single-month rally in nearly a decade—liquidity is being transferred from retail hands, cartload by cartload, into the big players’ vaults.
What’s even more worth pondering is the timing. The giant whale didn’t start acting at the beginning of the month. It accelerated purchases only after the BTC price broke into the $62,000–$65,000 range and began oscillating around there on August 19.
They’re chasing a trend that has already been confirmed—not guessing bottoms. And it’s the opposite of what retail investors do: the more the market drops, the more retail gets afraid. Big players are bolder as prices rise.
Every time you see data like this, old-school greenhorns’ first reaction is, “We’re about to get cut again.” But from a different angle, weak hands handing their chips to strong hands often becomes the fuel that powers the move.
In historical experience, the process of big fish eating small fish is often accompanied by a decent, real rally. Still, keep an eye out: the big players’ patience may be longer than retail investors imagine.
