NVIDIA (NVIDIA) and MediaTek (MediaTek) have upgraded their partnership again.

On August 31, NVIDIA announced that it would invest $3.5 billion (about NT$100 billion) to subscribe to convertible bonds issued by MediaTek. The two sides also expanded their long-term cooperation, extending the scope from end-user computing to AI data centers, in-house AI chips, PCs, and smart automobiles.

The significance of this transaction is not only that NVIDIA is investing in Taiwan’s leading IC design firms; it also means MediaTek is further moving into the AI infrastructure market, which is currently growing the fastest. It becomes an important chip design partner in NVIDIA’s NVLink Fusion ecosystem.

Nvidia invests $3.5 billion, MediaTek joins NVLink Fusion

According to Nvidia’s announcement, MediaTek will adopt the NVIDIA NVLink Fusion platform to help hyperscale cloud operators, cloud service providers, and leading AI model companies develop custom XPU solutions, and integrate these chips into rack-level AI Factories using NVIDIA NVLink.

Nvidia isn’t just selling GPUs—it’s moving to surround the AI ASIC market

As major cloud operators like Google and Amazon actively develop their own AI ASICs, AI data centers are gradually forming two tracks: one is Nvidia GPUs, and the other is custom accelerators designed in-house by tech giants.

With Nvidia launching NVLink Fusion this year, to a certain extent it is “opening” its own interconnect and rack-level infrastructure to non-Nvidia XPU.

Even if customers don’t use NVIDIA GPUs as all-purpose compute cores, they may still use NVIDIA’s NVLink, networking, CPUs, memory, and rack-level architecture. MediaTek, in turn, can play the role of helping customers truly design, package, and mass-produce their custom chips.

Jensen Huang: AI is changing every kind of computing platform

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said that AI is changing computing platforms everywhere—from the world’s largest AI Factories and PCs to cars—and described MediaTek as one of the world’s important semiconductor companies with capabilities in SoCs, connectivity technologies, performance, and energy efficiency.

MediaTek Vice Chairman and CEO Cai Lihang also said that Nvidia’s investment this time strengthens cooperation between the two companies across cloud AI infrastructure, on-prem AI computing, and automobiles.
