Russia’s largest bank will also include ETH and USDT as collateral: this time it’s not a retail-trader play—this is a state-level entry

Sber’s crypto-collateralized lending will be expanded: besides BTC, it will add USDt and ETH, and Russia’s banking industry is officially stepping in.

Popov, Deputy Chairman of Sber Bank—the top bank by assets in Russia—told TASS: existing loan products that use BTC as collateral will be broadened, and USDT and ETH will also be gradually included in the list of eligible collateral. The timing is set after Russia’s new crypto law takes effect: once the central bank allows these assets for public circulation, they will move forward. In plain terms, this isn’t the bank quietly “inventing” something—it’s waiting for the legal green light and then proceeding according to plan. With Sber backed by state capital, what it does largely reflects the direction of regulatory intent.

Impact on the market
- Short term: sentiment tailwind. A state-level major bank taking ETH as collateral is essentially a stamp of approval on ETH’s “asset attributes,” offsetting some of the recent weakness (ETH is currently $2,434.81, down 0.86% over 24 hours). Official acceptance of USDT is also a kind of validation for its status as a stablecoin. But honestly, the volume of Russian capital is unlikely to significantly move the global market—don’t expect a single big green candle.
- Medium term: industry signals matter more than the size of capital inflows. The shift from “banning contact with crypto” to “actively taking ETH as collateral” by traditional large banks—if it’s implemented, other banks in emerging markets are likely to follow. Collateralized borrowing is financing without forced selling; for coin prices, it’s a slow-burn positive catalyst.

My take
Thesis: structurally bullish, especially for ETH in the medium term. When a major bank accepts ETH as collateral, it shows institutional balance sheets are treating ETH as an asset rather than a speculative product. In the short term, BTC around $78,028.35 is consolidating on shrinking volume; this news alone isn’t enough to independently reverse the trend. For ETH, the key is whether the $2,400 level can hold—if it holds, the medium-term narrative will have fertile ground to build.

Risk point: detailed implementation rules for Russia’s new law have not been released yet. If the central bank delays, the timeline will be pushed back.
