Quantum computers haven’t won yet—Bitcoin is the one putting itself on insurance
Last week, Starkware mined a quantum-safe transaction on the Bitcoin mainnet, and it never altered the consensus rules
It uses the QSB proposal by researcher Avihu Levy: no soft fork, no hard fork, and no need to upgrade the core protocol
This transaction spent an output of 10,000 satoshis. Because the format is special, ordinary nodes don’t recognize it—so the Slipstream service from mining pools had to package it
The cost isn’t small either: it burned a few hours of GPU compute power, costing $150–$200
Sounds like a tall tale, but the idea is actually pretty straightforward
Bitcoin’s current signature algorithms, in theory, can’t withstand future sufficiently powerful quantum computers
Especially once a public key is exposed, a quantum attacker can theoretically derive the private key and steal the funds before the rightful owner confirms
QSB’s approach is to add a quantum-resistant, hash-function-based condition to the transaction, and then use signature “sanding” techniques to shift most of the computation off-chain and complete it in advance
In plain terms, it’s like installing the safety fuse ahead of time—so if something goes wrong, you’re not running around naked
But don’t get too excited: this is optional right now, not standard
The money has to be proactively moved into a protected construction before it becomes useful; for old coins whose public keys have already been exposed, even angels can’t save them
Starkware CEO Ben-Sasson has also said this is just an emergency channel—what he really wants is soft-forking to solve the problem thoroughly at the protocol level
Quantum threats may sound distant, but plenty of people in the industry are anxious—everyone’s trying to get ahead
