As reported by The Guardian, citing data from the European Central Bank (ECB), over the past decade the total value of banknotes in circulation across European Union countries has grown from €1 trillion to €1.6 trillion.
The number of banknotes in circulation now exceeds 31 billion, compared with 24 billion in 2019. At the same time, the most popular banknote among Europeans in 2025 was the €50 denomination; the €100 note ranked second in terms of demand.
