CEX spot trading volume doubles within five days, and market activity clearly rebounds
According to The Block data as of August 23, the spot trading volume of centralized crypto exchanges (CEXs) doubled within five days, rebounding from this year’s low point to exceed $40.8 billion.
Meanwhile, monthly data also confirms this warming trend. As of August to date, trading volume has reached $490 billion, compared with $670 billion for the full month of July.
Notably, although trading volume doubled over just five trading days, the figure still remains far below the 12-month high of $105 billion set after the “10/10” liquidation event, indicating that the market is still some distance away from a truly frenzied phase.
The report also specifically points out that the rise of spot ETFs and digital asset treasuries is reshaping where market funds flow. During this period, strong investment demand for many mainstream coins has been diverted by ETFs and DEXs, to some extent suppressing CEX reported inflows.
Specifically, first, the emergence of spot ETFs and digital asset treasury companies is diverting funds that would otherwise go to centralized exchanges, to a degree dampening CEXs’ reported trading volume.
Second, the rapid rise of decentralized exchanges such as Hyperliquid and Lighter is becoming a third force for siphoning market share from centralized exchanges.
However, despite competitive challenges from traditional financial instruments and decentralized exchanges, altcoins still hold advantages that are difficult for spot ETFs and DEXs to replicate—such as faster listing speed and greater depth across trading pairs.
In last week’s crypto market performance, Bitcoin and Ethereum rose by more than 23% and 30%, respectively, marking the strongest bullish run in over a year. At the same time, the altcoin market (excluding BTC and ETH) climbed by about 13% during the same period.
