On August 23, according to a report by The New York Times, the European cryptocurrency exchange platform Zondacrypto has fallen into crisis. After its founder, Sylwester Suszek, disappeared in 2022, Przemyslaw Kral, who took over as CEO of the exchange, also went missing this April. The incident has once again drawn public attention to concerns about fund security and regulatory issues in the cryptocurrency industry.
Zondacrypto’s predecessor was BitBay, founded in Poland in 2014 and once one of the largest crypto exchanges in Central and Eastern Europe. Suszek was dubbed “the king of crypto” by Polish media, but in March 2022 he disappeared near a fuel depot in southern Poland. His family then reportedly received messages from what appeared to be kidnappers, demanding payment of Bitcoin as a ransom. Polish prosecutors had already opened investigations into alleged offenses such as illegal deprivation of liberty involving relevant individuals.
After Suszek’s disappearance, a lawyer and his assistant, Kral, took over the company’s operations. In April, the Zondacrypto website shut down, and users were unable to withdraw funds or carry out trades. Kral had previously said the platform held a Bitcoin reserve worth more than $330 million, but accessing those assets required the digital keys held by Suszek. The claim faced skepticism because the related wallets had long shown no activity records.
Zondacrypto previously claimed to have about 1.3 million users and expanded its influence by sponsoring football clubs, the Polish Olympic Committee, and others. However, as users’ withdrawal problems persisted, Estonia’s Financial Intelligence Unit revoked the operating license of its parent company on June 29. Currently, Polish prosecutors are investigating Zondacrypto’s establishment and operations, and Kral has not appeared publicly for several months.
